Cross dressing is one of the cross gender behaviours that children may do. It also changes over time. Sixty years or more ago it would be unusual for girls to wear jeans boys' clothes - but after the war there were lots of changes in what people wore. Nowadays it is more likely that girls will be allowed to dress in boys' clothes than for boys to dress in girls' clothes.

Transvestism is the practice of dressing in a style or manner traditionally associated with the opposite sex. In some cultures, transvestism is practiced for religious, traditional, or ceremonial reasons. Though the term was coined as late as the s, the phenomenon is not new. It was referred to in the Hebrew Bible. Today, the term transvestite is commonly considered outdated and derogatory, with the term cross-dresser used as a more appropriate replacement. Magnus Hirschfeld coined the word transvestite in from Latin trans- , "across, over" and vestitus , "dressed" to refer to the sexual interest in cross-dressing. Hirschfeld's group of transvestites consisted of both males and females, with heterosexual , homosexual , bisexual , and asexual orientations.
